"Live right now/Yeah just be yourself/It doesn't matter if it's good enough for someone else." - "The Middle" by Jimmy Eat World.
Self-acceptance is ridiculously difficult to achieve in modern-day America, and it was something I had to fight bitterly when I was growing up. Music was an enormously influencing factor; the quote above was the starting push of my journey to accept myself. Why be as others told me to be when all I have ever needed is cemented within me? I identify culturally as Irish, and have always felt an unbreakable connection with that part of my heritage. "Failte", which means "Welcome" in Gaelic, is a central part of Irish culture-to take in even strangers with open arms. I have since applied this way of thinking to myself, and for well over a year now I have been welcoming myself, exactly as I am. It's the best feeling ever.
